LESSONS ON SCREW PILES - INSIDE STRUCTURES

Sometimes #structuralengineers require an increase in the performance of an existing structure - and they decide additional retrofitted piles is the best solution.

If you are reviewing such a situation for a client - the best thing you can do is collaborate with an expert in this field.

WHY?
1. Because understanding access is to understand the plant you can use.
2. Because understanding the size of the plant helps you understand the torque available.
3. TORQUE IS LOAD. If you have no idea as the torque - how can you understand what size pile can be installed?

A number of iterations of items 1-3 above will be required until a workable and efficient result is achieved - where substructure is helping the superstructure.

In the case of the photo below - our team are installing piles with a smaller excavator so the powerhead is smaller, and therefore the piles are also smaller. These piles are designed for 150kN (ULS) in compression. Critical to the success of this job is taking accurate measurements of the walls and ceilings, and understanding what can and can't be removed during the install.

Without knowing these details - you can't understand the likely pile design, and therefore price / programme / risk etc. And this is why you need to engage an expert early.
